Vibration Mitigation of Sagged Cables Using a Viscous Inertial Mass Damper: An Experimental Investigation

In this paper, we describe the design and manufacturing of a viscous inertial mass-damper (VIMD) prototype. The damper parameters, mass, damping coefficient can be continuously adjusted. Experimental validations were carried out on VIMD with various parameters scaled sagged cable 19.47 m long for vibration mitigation, along simulation study using finite element method (FEM). experimental results show that modal ratio was remarkably increased by VIMD. achieved maximum ratios first two modes 6.98% 8.15%, respectively, which are about 10 times values conventional damper. sag influence damper-control performance also studied changing tension. It showed provided significantly reduced sag, whereas second not. Fourier amplitude spectra responses subjected to sine sweep excitations mode split into pair fixed points occurred introducing as in theory fixed-point (FPM) optimum tuned mass FPM investigated comparison method.
